Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on safari with my two sisters and one brother-in-law in Zimbabwe Africa in mid October. It was late in the season so we had the safari lodges and the guides pretty much to ourselves.

Time

We came across these three zebras early morning. We photographed them for a couple of minutes before they turned and ran away from us. Some of the photos of their tails up and them running were just as nice

Lighting

This was taken in the dry season so it was a little easier to photograph the animals. Lots of times they were in the open and not hidden behind the brush and hard to see.

Equipment

I used my Cannon EOS 7D Mark II with a Cannon EF 70-300mm lens

Inspiration

Our very skilled guide managed to find wonderful wildlife while we were chauffeured in an open air 4x4 vehicle. It's very exciting when you come across any of the wild animals or birds.

Editing

I cropped this a little and lightened the exposure since it was early morning.

In my camera bag

I started my photography trips using a Cannon EOS Rebel T3 and bought my 7D Mark II several years later. I always carry both camera bodies in case one breaks. You don't want to be on a trip without a camera. My favorite lens is my EF 70-300 but I generally have a 50mm lens and a wide angle with me, as well as a couple more. I don't usually carry a tripod on trips like this since there is no place to put it.

Feedback

Africa is the best place to take wildlife photography but I recently took a trip to the Amazon River in Peru which provided an excellent display of animals and birds. If you are just starting I recommend going on a photography trip and taking advantage of the expert advice of a professional photographer. I have traveled on a few and plan to do more. As an amateur I need all the help I can get.
