Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Quezon City, Philippines at the Creative Photo Light Studio.

Time

Since this was shot in a studio, time difference doesn't really matter because we can control the light using strobes and flashes.

Lighting

We really wanted the shot to look dramatic and mysterious like having a streak of light coming from above the model/background. To do this, we used a rectangular softbox with grid on camera right, tilted downwards the model. Since this kind of lighting would cause quite a lot of shadows, we added a fill light on the left side using another softbox. You can probably see it from the catchlight on here eyes.

Equipment

This photo was shot with a Nikon D750 and a Sigma 85mm 1.4 Art. We used a two-light setup strobes with softboxes.

Inspiration

The photo session was really more on the concept of using colored gels to show our creativity and this is just one of the pre-shoots.

Editing

Yes. Since the studio didn't have a standard reflector or snoot that could mimic the streak of light on the backdrop, I decided to make it more visible through post-processing. The skin of the model was also improved and added overall sharpening.

In my camera bag

I don't have a lot of equipment, so most of the the I just bring them all in the shoot. If the shoot needs off-camera flash, I'm gonna bring a 9ft lightstand, Godox TT685N, Montana flash, 41" Selens Parabolic Umbrella. I only have one DSLR which is the Nikon D750 together with a Nikkor 50mm 1.8G and a Sigma 85mm 1.4 Art and that's it.

Feedback

This photo session was a little bit tricky for me since the subject not actually a model, but also a photographer such as myself. Being able to know how to use the correct lighting, proper position and just the right exposure will really be a big help. This shot idea only came out while we were shooting and was not really part of the main concept we were doing. Always remember that it's alright to pitch out your ideas and concepts to the whole team. Pitch your idea right. Execute it well.
