Behind The Lens

Location

This is a portrait of Tatyana McFadden. She is a Paralympic gold medalist. This was for a commercial shoot taken on location at the University of Illinois Burbonais training facility.

Time

I photographed indoors, so I wasn't too concerned about time of day. It was in the afternoon after her practice, so I would say around 3:30 p.m.

Lighting

As far as the lighting set up, I used two, 400 watt strobes as my key lights, accenting her in her racing chair from behind. For the fill, I used a 750 watt strobeat a third of its power in an octobox directly in front, slightly bounced off of a flexifill reflector.

Equipment

I shot with a Nikon D850 and a Sigma 85mm. My apature was at a F/11. For my lighting I used two, 400 watt and one 750 watt flash heads.

Inspiration

I really wanted to highlight her shear beauty and strength. So naturally her strength was key. I wanted to accentuate her strength and power with something bold and dramatic. Lighting her from behind really gave that look I was going for.

Editing

I processed this though Adobe Lightroom. I cleaned up some of the back drop from excessive tire marks and tweaked some of the saturation and contrast .

In my camera bag

Normally in my bag, depends on what I am shooting. But normally, I carry my Nikon D850, Nikkor 14-24 f/2.8, 24-70 f/2.8 and my "nifty-fifty" Nikkor 50mm f/1.4. I carry a Nikon SB 950 flash head and spare batteries. Special occasions I carry my Sigma 85mm f/1.4 art and a Nikkor 105mm f/ 1.4

Feedback

When I do location shoots such as this, I bring am assortment of grip and support. I location scout if I do set ups with seemless backdrops. Give yourself ample room to work. It may be the case that you may be confined to smaller areas. Learn to rig lighting safely and proficiently,
