Behind The Lens

Location

I took this one at a group shoot in Valparaiso, Indiana. There were 12 photographers and 6 models and we rotated about every hour shooting a different model. This was where I met this lovely lady. She goes by Lilmizzunique and she has over 19k Instagram followers. She's incredibly beautiful and talented. I've shot her about 5 times since and I plan to shoot her many times in the future.

Time

We shot from 10am-6pm and I think I worked with her in the middle of that so it was probably about 2pm. Very hot day so high sun and heat were a challenge.

Lighting

All natural light. It was a hot sunny day so just tried to keep the sun out of the girls' eyes as much as possible. No flash or reflectors or anything for this shot.

Equipment

Canon T5i. Hand held. Sun was so strong tripod wasn't necessary.

Inspiration

This is my car and I knew her dark complexion and black hair would contrast well. She's so strong I just need to tell her where to be and she does the rest. This is a particularly strong pose which I love.

Editing

Very little. Just some light smoothing. Like I said it was an intense sun so had to increase contrast a bit and do some exposure enhancements. I cropped this tight to make her pop from the background.

In my camera bag

My camera, a couple telephotos (55-250 and 70-300), a 50mm fixed and 35mm fixed. Misc batteries, SD cards, filters etc.

Feedback

Find yourself an amazing model and let her be herself. Don't tell her pose here, move your arm there, whatever. That's how you lose who she is. Let her move, let her smile, let her scowl, let her be herself. And you just shoot, shoot, shoot. Take LOTS of shots and tell her she's awesome and you'll get great results.
