I was always into photography but used my mobile phone to capture images so far. My mother surprised me with my first DSLR only about a month ago and now we're inseparable. My friends had come home for the first time and I was showing them the sights in and around Mysore when we chanced upon this Marsh Crocodile skimming the surface of the water in the Kaveri river. Needless to say, we were spellbound. It took me a while to stop marvelling at its beauty and bring my camera up to click some photos. Out of all the photos I took, this was by far my favourite. There is something majestic and captivating in this eye and I just can't look away.

This marsh crocodile was spotted swimming in the Kaveri river in Karnataka, IndiaTime
This image was clicked at around 9am when the crocodiles are normally already basking on far shores. I was lucky to spot this guy skimming across the water.Lighting
I almost always shoot in natural light. Thankfully, it was early enough in the day to prevent the harsh afternoon light from ruining the picture. I was also lucky that the sun wasn't shining from directly behind the crocodile, helping me capture the details of its skin better.Equipment
My mother surprised me with my first DSLR only about a month before I shot this. Until then I would take photographs using my mobile phone. I used the Canon EOS 2000D (aka Rebel T7) with the EF 75-300mm zoom lens to capture this image.Inspiration

The picture didn't need too much post-processing. I used the Lightroom mobile app to crop the image to make the photo better composed. I also played around with the saturation and contrast to make the picture pop.In my camera bag
Being a beginner, I currently only have the Canon EOS 2000D body with the 18-55mm and the 75-300mm lenses. I always make sure to have an extra battery on hand. It just won't do to find the perfect shot but realise that my camera has no charge left. I also have a magnetic compass and a basic cleaning kit in my bag.Feedback
November to about mid-February are definitely the best months to visit. Not only will you get the chance to see these majestic creatures, hundreds of migratory birds come annually at this time to the Kaveri river to lay their eggs and nurture their young. Of course, when it comes to capturing any wildlife photo, patience is of the utmost importance. Keep your eyes open and wait for that perfect photo to happen. You will definitely not regret the wait.
