cragside was the home of william armstrong 1st baron armstrong founder of armstrong whitworth armamants firm .cragside was the first house in the world to be lit using hydroelectric .the oriiginal building was a small shooting lodge which armstrong built between 1864 and 1869 he enlarged the house in two phases between 1869 and 1882 . it is now govened by the national trust .
