Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photograph close to Lomello, a small town in the South-Ovest of Lombardia Region, Italy

Time

Take note that I took this photo many years ago, during summer of 1984. So, if I remember well, I took it, more or less, in the middle of the day.

Lighting

What to say about lighting. To be frank I don't like the light of the middle hours of the day. During summer the early morning till 10.00 and the late afternoon from 17.00 are the best hours because the warm light. But, despite that, in this specific case, in my opinion the light was right for this subject.

Equipment

As I said I took this photo in the 1984, when the digital technology was just a dream. The camera was a Contax 139 Quartz with a Yashica tele, 200 mm. The film was a slide Kodachrome 25 ASA. I didn't use any tripod. Instead I used a polarizing filter; I don't remember the brand, may be a B+W

Inspiration

This photo is part of a photographic shooting, a project that I called "Terra di Lomello" (Land of Lomello). The Lomellina, whose Lomello is the most important town, is one of the main agricultural areas of the Lombardia Region, where the main product is the rice. The aim of this project was to tel about the life and the activities of that area and the characteristics of the territory. With the help of the Municipality of Lomello I organized a Photography exhibition of which I'm quite satisfied.

Editing

The original slide has been simply developed by a photographic laboratory. Then, years after, I digitalized the slide with a Nikon CoolScan V getting a high resolution file. I post-processed the file, mainly to reduce the noise caused by the scan. Furthermore a bit adjusted the contrast, the sharpness and the saturation.

In my camera bag

Now, in the digital era, depending on the type of shooting, I use a Canon EOS 7D MarkII, EF 17-40mm f/4.0L USM, EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM, EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM. The tripod, that I use for landscape, is a Gitzo with a ball head. I use often also a set of filters, mainly for landscape, like polarizer and LEE Neutral Grad Filters. Sometimes, for long exposures, I use a LEE Big Stopper Filters. I use also, just for fill-in purpose, a flash Canon Speedlite 580 EX II.

Feedback

Just bring with you, together with your gear, the passion and the creativity. When you walk don't look only ahed, but sometime look also back, up and down, a different point of view could hold some nice surprises. And very important to me, break the rules sometimes
