Behind The Lens

Location

This is a photo of a star jasmine flower that is in my garden. I have nurtured and enjoyed this plant for 20 years and pass by it numerous times a day. I have always appreciated the fragrance of its flowers and the beauty of its prolific white flowers against the dark green of its leaves. However, it was not until I started photographing these flowers close up that I truly came to observe in detail and appreciate the real beauty and intricacy of their delicate yet simple lines.

Time

I awoke at first light that day in September and saw that the fog had rolled in and was hanging in the lower parts of our pasture. The sun had not yet peeked over the tree line. I quickly put on some clothes, grabbed my new camera, and headed outside. I was very excited to try out my new camera with the fog and the sun breaking through.

Lighting

I first went to the lower part of the pasture where the fog was densest. By the time I made my way to where the star jasmine plant is, the fog was lifting and the sun was just rising over the tree line. The light was bright but somewhat diffused by the moisture still in the air.

Equipment

This was among the first photos that I took with my new iPhone Pro 11.

Inspiration

The moisture from the fog was on everything and with the sun just coming up there were numerous opportunities for interesting photographs.

Editing

At the time I took this picture, the only post processing I used was what was available with Photos on my iPhone and Mac. I have since learned to use the filters available with Luminar Flex in conjunction with the Photos capabilities. The B&W version of this photograph is a recent upload and I used the B&W conversion filter and minimal post processing with a few other Luminar filters.

In my camera bag

What I love most about using the iPhone camera is that I put it in my pocket or sometimes a waist pouch. It is almost always with me. Recently I acquired a gorillapod for those times when I need the stability of a tripod. It too fits in a pocket or pouch.

Feedback

I love the capabilities, convenience, and flexibility of the IPhone Pro 11 with its 3 built in lenses. It is a great tool for those of us just starting to take photography more seriously. It is camera that is especially useful for close-up photographs such as the star jasmine photograph. It has been fun experimenting to find out what works and what doesn’t work and just like any camera and lens it has it exceptional capabilities along with its limitations. What I love most is the ability to capture the moment when I see something inspirational such as the dew drops on a flower when the sun is just right.
