Behind The Lens

Location

Castle Rock, Brenton-On-Sea - in the Western Cape province of South Africa

Time

Sunset

Lighting

Typical winter weather, overcast and moody.

Equipment

Canon 5D Mk IV, Canon 17-40mm lens, tripod, remote release

Inspiration

This shot itself wasn't planned at all. I was on a landscape workshop presented by top South African landscape photographer, Stuart Apsey, that evening shooting long exposures over a rocky outcrop into a small bay. I turned around and saw Stuart shooting the Castle Rock outcrop and thought it would make for an interesting environmental portrait. PS Stuart's own work is world-class, and absolutely incredible - check it out at http://stuartapseyphotography.com

Editing

Just my basic Lightroom workflow

In my camera bag

I used to carry so much gear, 2 - 3 bodies and always a bunch of lenses. These days I travel much lighter. For most portrait work I will only use one body and a 50mm or 35mm prime. One wide prime or zoom for landscapes, and for wildlife I now use only the Canon 100-400 Mk II.

Feedback

Just keep looking around for interesting shots. Sometimes the best shot is actually behind you!
