The 'Gewad' is an old residential area in Ghent. It is part of the mediëval part of Ghent as well as of the period of the Industrial revolution. Nearby are the 'Gravensteen' (mediëval castle of the Counts of Flanders) as well as the 'Prinsenhof' where Emperor Charles V was born (not a very popular person in Ghent).
