Behind The Lens

Location

I was driving through Tillicoultry & spotting the top of the tower as I passed a side road, I just had to turn around & search it out.

Time

This was taken a showery Winter's afternoon, one of those showery days where you can be pitchforked from dark drama into brilliant light from one moment to the next.

Lighting

The sun was fairly fleeting, and I waited for a brief gap in the cloud to get the illumination on the hills behind, which was what had initially made the tower stand out as I passed.

Equipment

Canon 5Dii and a Canon 28-70f3.5-4.5ii & a circuar polariser

Inspiration

I love anything Gothic in architecture, & after getting the first glimpse of that mysterious tower, what really caught my eye was the light on the Ochil Hills behind in their Winter gold, contrasting nicely with the red sandstone & the blue grey clouds

Editing

Processed in Lightroom from raw, with contrast adjustment & slight lift of shadows, this shot really did not need many tweaks.

In my camera bag

I am finding myself more & more drawn to legacy manual lenses for landscapes, having found this makes me take a more considered approach, so my current kit bag favourites are a Tamron BBAR 28mm f2.5 prime for wide landscape & night shots, Helios 44M 58mm f2 for those glorious swirly bokeh moments & more recently a Neewer 85mm f1.8 for creative shots ( and yes - more bokeh). I still go back to my trusty Canon 28-70 f3.5-4.5ii and Canon 50mm f1.8 when autofocus is a must, and for the longer lenses I use an Optomax 300mm f5.5 prime in addition to two Sigma telephotos. My favourite body is the Canon 5Dii, with 7D for faster work with higher fps and Canon 350D & 450D for infrared.

Feedback

As is often the case in Scotland, the joy (and sometimes the frustration) is the likelihood of 6 seasons showing face in any given half hour, so most often I find myself lurking until the right seasonal window of opportunity shows face & rain-cover for kit is always essential.
