Behind The Lens

Location

This was essentially taken in my backyard. My husband and I were out on our back deck on a summer evening in 2019 when the neighborhood (male) Great Horned Owl perched in a tree behind our property. I, of course, ran in to grab my camera and was delighted when I ultimately ended up with this shot.

Time

Early evening

Lighting

This is completely natural, late day sun.

Equipment

This was shot on a Nikon D7200 with a 200-500mm lens.

Inspiration

The owls in our area are among my favorite subjects to shoot. They're just such amazing creatures and I am constantly amazed by their distinct colors and patterns.

Editing

I try not to do much in the way of post-processing. This shot was cropped but I believe that's about it. The natural lighting couldn't have been more perfect!

In my camera bag

I try to keep it simple. Since my main subjects are generally landscapes/cityscapes and wildlife, I generally carry only my Nikon D7200, a 200-500 mm lens, and a 18-300 mm lens.

Feedback

Patience and a long lens. There are plenty of times that I head out and don't come home with much that really makes me happy. This photo is a good example of those others times, when the photo comes to me.
