White-clad followers of the Layene Sufi sect of Yoff walk towards the Great Mausoleum of Seydina Limamou Laye for Friday prayer. Limamou Laye, born under the yoke of French colonialism, proclaimed himself to be the reincarnation of the prophet Muhamed in 1883, and began preaching his message of purity and peace. Many laughed at first, but some listened, and today, Yoff is dominated by his followers. The portrait of his son, Seydina Issa Rohou Laye, who claimed to be the reincarnation of Jesus Christ, is plastered all over the city. Senegal is home to many such confraternities, with the Mourides representing by far the largest group.
