This was taken in my fall 2019 Heavy Rescue Technician course at the Bergen County Emergency Medical Services Academy in Paramus, NJ. Most photos taken on the fly, as I was part of a team doing jaws of life, and related stabilizing tasks, as we used the tools on at least 7 vehicles and rescue scenarios. It was chilly outside, but we worked up quite a sweat in bunker gear performing all our practical skill tasks. A lot of these crews had seen the 9-11-2001 attack on the Twin Towers in NYC.

Behind The Lens

Location

Photo taken during my recertification class at Bergen County, NJ, Emergency Medical Services Academy(Paramus, NJ). Heavy Rescue Technician training that day consisted of Jaws of Life power tools, hand tools, vehicle stabilzation, safety around air bags and batteries, scenarios involving the time available to stabilize and treat and transport mock victims, as preparation for the real thing. Class was in full bunker gear, and I had my small Nikon point and shoot Coolpix S3700, which was small enough to go in my pocket and still be quick to take pictures in succession. Anything else would be too big and bulky, and still do the evolutions with our teams.

Time

This was early afternoon, fall of 2019, cool outside, but we were sweating profusely from the days activities. Took pictures in the AM too, recharged the battery at lunchtime, so this was taken about one half hour after a full recharge. Each shot was quick point and shoot in between evolutions, as we took turns doing a scenario, and then a quick break to go over the good points and bad points of the last evolution. No time to compose, just try to take a pic when people were nt blocking the shot.

Lighting

No, sunlight helped, but I got other pictures inside vehicles fine with the flash. Very unscientific approach, just take the best shot you could when you had a moment to capture something of interest. The doors are off on the passenger side to allow EMS to enter from the side furthest away from the patient, stabilize the neck for possible spinal injury, etc. One of the more common situations is a passenger with an injured knee and/or a driver with a foot stuck under or around the accelerator.

Equipment

Nikon Coolpix S3700, battery charged, and then recharged during a lunch break.

Inspiration

The object is to refresh your memory later on of the training tips during the training. In emergencies, seconds count, especially when a vehicle catches fire.

Editing

All I did was put the pictures into PowerPoint to show other team members

In my camera bag

Canon T6 with its own bag, Canon T7i with its own bag, and the Nikon Coolpix as a secondary.

Feedback

You can t do this one without safety gear.
