Behind The Lens

Location

I captured this at Arches National Park in Utah

Time

It was near noon in October.

Lighting

As you can see, it was a largely cloudy day with skies that can only be found in Utah! I was able to enhance the shadows and clarity by taking the image with an HDR process.

Equipment

No tripod was necessary. I captured the image with my Canon 5D, Mark III and a Canon 24-105mm lens. The image was shot from 35 mm, and I shot at an f/16, 1/640 sec, and ISO 400.

Inspiration

I shot this image on my first day of a multi-day trip to the Park. Found the pine on the trail, with the sun's rays streaming through the clouds, and I had to have it!

Editing

I used several techniques. First Photomatix from Lightroom Classic to process the HDR; then on the Photoshop when I converted the image to a smart object and applied Camera Raw and Luminar effects and filters.

In my camera bag

I tend to travel light. Unless I know I'm going to be photographing a situation that compels an absolute steady hand in low light surroundings, I keep the tripod at home. These days, DSLRs have anti-vibration and excellent sensors with high ISOs, so that even in low light situations, I can get away with a free hand capture and a good de-noise processor that you can find in Topaz or even Lightroom.

Feedback

Stay away from shooting in the summer. Skies are usually clear blue and flat. Shadows are also intense, so that B&W is the best alternative. Unless I'm on vacation, I'm not an early morning or after sunset person, so I try to go for the dramatic skies and colors of falls, winters, and springs.
