Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the Butterfly enclosure of the Melbourne VIC Zoo

Time

I tend to go to the Zoo early mornings in the hope of missing the school groups. It can get very busy in the enclosure with school children, families and photographers

Lighting

Lighting was not something I considered when I saw these 2 butterflies. I wasn't sure how long they would stay together so it was very much point, shoot and hope!

Equipment

My camera is an Olympus EM 1 Mark 11, with Lumix lens100 to 300

Inspiration

I love the opportunity to capture close up images of butterfly wings. I didn't imagine seeing two butterflies together

Editing

My post processing consists of cropping, sharpening and some minor saturation to bring up the colour

In my camera bag

When I go to the zoo I tend to take one lens as the 100 to 300 tends to be heavy and there is lots to explore. Also changing lenses can mean you miss opportunities as invariably animals birds and butterflies don't wait for you to change lenses and settings

Feedback

Take the time to observe surroundings so that you don't miss the unsual or unexpected. If the image you want doesn't work out or the subjects move, make several more visits. I always go to the butterfly enclosure when I visit the zoo because I know I will see these beautiful creatures in different ways or different places and together in different positions or groups
