Location
This photo was taken in my college apartment. I set up a backdrop, a single external light and closed the blinds.Time
This photo was taken in the early afternoon. I had to close the blinds and use a towel to block out extra light so I could shoot using only the external light I was manipulating.Lighting
I am a big fan of contrast and black & white, so this self-portrait was an opportunity to experiment with both. One external light was used, which I attached to a tripod next to the camera. I originally had a soft box on the light but removed it because I wanted a harsher contrast between light and dark.Equipment
This was shot with a Sony A7iii, tripod and external panel light turned to cool color temperature.Inspiration
This image was taken in March 2020, at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Even if I wanted to do a portrait of someone else, I wasn't able to due to safety. I was literally my only available subject. I have always enjoyed self portraits and appreciate looking back on them over the years. It gives me an interesting creative perspective on how I was feeling during different periods in my life, both personally and creatively.Editing
The only post processing on this image was to slightly bump up the highlights on my face to even out skin tone. Everything else was the magic of the camera. In my camera bag
I am a loyal Canon user and still use my Canon T5i to shoot most things. In school I used Nikons and for filmmaking work I prefer the Sony A7iii. I always have a tripod, phone attachment, lens cleaning cloth, lots of batteries, and my drone just in case. For self portraits or simple shoots, it's a pretty small kit.Feedback
Just try it. I held the light in my hand, moved the tripod around, etc.. until it hit my face at just the right angle. Put on good music and just make it a fun experiment. And take advantage of our digital photography and limitless images - I took probably 400 shots on this particular day before I ended up with this self portrait.
