Behind The Lens

Location

This photograph was taken at the Barbican in London, an estate that was built in the Brutalist style. Large structures, with concrete being the predominant building material.

Time

This photograph was taken on 4th August 2012, in the middle of the afternoon.

Lighting

A very contrasty day with lots of bright sunshine outside, but good shade in the passageway. As concrete is a decent mid grey, metering and exposure was no problem.

Equipment

My trusty old Nikon D700 with a 24/70mm lens shot at iso800, at 65mm, F7.1 and handheld at 1/60th second exposure.

Inspiration

I love the Barbican, its a wonderful place to shoot, with lots of big structures, concrete, and lots of texture. I wanted to capture the concrete receding into the distance towards the dark doorway at the end, and a symmetrical composition.

Editing

Very simple black and white conversion in Lightroom, and bringing down the highlights, increased shadows and a touch of texture and clarity to accentuate the concrete and increased contrast.

In my camera bag

A lot, as I often shoot music festivals.. usually two bodies, a 70/200, 24/70, 14/24 and a 50mm, plus tripod etc and a large Peli case to ship it all around in. On this occasion, as I was travelling light, it was purely one body and the 24/70.

Feedback

Keep your eyes open for similar compositions, repeated structural elements, and symmetry, and don’t be afraid to experiment with your equipment and post-processing to get the look and feel that you want to achieve.
