Behind The Lens
Location
This photo was taken in the downtown area where I lived.Time
It was taken in the evening around 8pm I think.Lighting
There's nothing really specific about lighting. It was late so of course I used a tripod and set my camera up for a long exposure. I didn't really have a specific shutter speed for this shot. I tried multiple settings to give me a variety to choose from when I began to post-process.Equipment
The camera I used for this shot was the Sony A6000 with the Sigma 16mm lens. Tripod and remote shutter button was also used when taking this.Inspiration
This photo was actually a re-take of a similar photo from back when I first started doing photography. Someone had requested the original photo as a print to hang up in their office, and I thought that since that was taken so long ago and I had learned so much more, I would go and retake it. The flags in the background of this shot was a new memorial that the city had set up so it was cool to compose it so that I got those in the background.Editing
So this photo is actually a composite of two images plus a little extra. The traffic was light that night so I wasn't really able to get multiple cars in both directions. Instead, I combined the light trails of two different cars to get both the head and tail lights. Also, as stated above, with this being a re-take of an older photo, the original was during Christmas time and the lights above the building were on. During the time I took this photo, those lights weren't at the top of the building, and the person requesting the print really liked them being there so I went and added each one to mimic how they were in the original photo. In my camera bag
I don't really have a lot of equipment, so I pretty much have everything with me all the time. The only exception would be my tripod. If I know I'm not going to need it for a certain long exposure, I will typically leave it at home. My bag does usually contain my camera, prime wide angle lens, and a zoom lens, remote shutter button, ND filters, extra batteries, and SD cards. That's pretty much about it.Feedback
If I have a certain shot or location in mind, I always try to get there earlier than I plan to take it. This gives me time to play around with composition, and sometimes while I'm there, I come up with new ideas for the photo. If you're really wanting to get in the light trails, find a road or time that gives you the best opportunity for traffic so you're not having to wait as long between shots. It can also take a couple of tries to get the long exposure timing right so that you get the full trail of lights.
