Behind The Lens

Location

Emerald Lake in Yoho National Park - British Columbia, Canada

Time

about 2 hours before sunset

Lighting

The light on the trees centre frameonly appeared during 2/3 of the exposure and never again the entire time I was here

Equipment

Canon 6D Mark II + 24-105mm F4, tripod, 10 stop ND

Inspiration

The reflections of this lake were like something I had never seen before in person and I have always loved seeing pictures of mountain reflections. The glow of light on the trees was purely by chance and appeared after my exposure already started

Editing

Since this ND makes any shot appear more orange, I tried to reverse that in Lightroom's HSL. The sky was also much brighter than it appears in this edit, so I used local adjustments to brighten the landscape and darken the sky (as well as for the reflection of course). Quite a few layers were also used in Luminar 3 as well

In my camera bag

The Canon 6D II I had just upgraded to only 2 weeks prior due to my 6D having issues. Most shots I use a Sigma 12-24mm because I love the ultra wide and often get up closeas possible. I also carry a Sigma 20mm F1.4 for night shots, canon 24-105mm F4 for mid range zoom and a Tamron 150-600mm mostly for wildlife. I Have a tripod on short travels, but on long hikes it can be quite a bit of weight

Feedback

Very calm day of course is key. more cloud than sun was helpful and late day gave for nice lighting to work with but not too close to sunset as the shadows on the mountains get very difficult to work with
