Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Lindis Pass (South Island, New Zealand) during a family visit. My son-in-law, who was our tour guide, stopped at the side of the road upon seeing this beautiful view.

Time

It was middle of the day at 2pm when we were just on our way back to our hotel in Wanaka.

Lighting

The midday sun was up but the dark clouds floating over the mountain ranges had soften the view of the landscape. At that time there was no need to pull out and choose which ND filter to use.

Equipment

This image was shot using Canon 6D, which I borrowed from m son, with a 40mm lens at f/11 and 1/160sec shutter speed. I used my tripod and set my focus applying the hyperfocal distance formula.

Inspiration

It was just a random decision at that moment when we saw the effect of the clouds and their shadows over the beautiful landscape.

Editing

I was a beginner LR user and my knowledge was very limited at that time. I simply reduced the highlights in LR to bring more details to the foreground.

In my camera bag

Now that I have my own Canon 5D Mark III camera, I always have it in my bag with the Samyang 14mm f/2.8 lens and the Rokinon 35mm lens. I also have an intervalometer, ND filters, spare batteries, torch/flashlight, and a tripod.

Feedback

We enjoyed that tour in New Zealand but that photo was not even part of my plan. I guess I was just lucky to stop at the right spot at the right time when the clouds were present to soften the view. One lesson I learned from this experience is to always bring sets of ND filter when doing midday landscape photography. The friendly clouds may not always be there.
