Location
Colgate Lake, near East Jewett, NY in the Catskill Mountains. Hard to believe this is less than a 3 hour drive from NYC. A great local-favorite spot for swimming and kayaking (see small, lime-green kayak at left side of the image).Time
Mid-afternoon.Lighting
A storm started to roll in, filtering the light. But the wind hadn't picked up yet, so the surface was still a mirror.Equipment
My trusty Canon 6D Mark II, with a 24-105L lens. Hand-held.Inspiration
I was intrigued by the way the still water and the white of the clouds created some places where the clouds were reflected but others where the brown lake bottom showed through. It created the sense of a mirror, but one where the reflection is translated rather than simply reproduced.Editing
Minimal adjustments in Lightroom to recapture the feeling I felt and the intensity of color that I saw in the moment. In my camera bag
It varies, of course, but my most common kit includes the Canon 6D Mark II (their lightest full-frame DSLR), the 24-105 F4 L, and a 70-200 F4 L. An extra battery if I'm going to be out all day. The 24-105 is a pretty versatile walking-around lens and sometimes it's all I'll take. But I love the 70-200. It's super sharp and the extra focal length lets me see and things in a way I can't with my own, unaided eyes. It also lets me compose images within what my eyes see without needing to lose resolution through cropping.Feedback
The Catskills are an unsung treasure. Get out into Greene County and you've got magnificent waterfalls (Kaaterskill), long mountain views, rugged hiking trails (bears, porcupines), remote-looking lakes. Drive just a bit further North and you start hitting beautiful old farms, many still working hard to keep us fed. And woven through it all are some funky little towns with their own bits of local color (Windham, Tannersville, Hunter, Phoenicia, etc.) The variety of scenery is hard to beat.
