Location
This photo was taken in Brisbane city over looking the home bound traffic.Time
This photo encompasses the best moments within a 5 hour window. I started shooting 2 hours before golden hour to ensure I got every second of both lighting events (gold and blue hour) and stopped after night fall.Lighting
I believe a sunset or sunrise is a collection of beautiful moments and cannot truly be captured in a single exposure. To truly capture their beauty they need to be considered events, and in this photo I have blended 5 hours of events into a single frame to create a memory.Equipment
I use the Canon 5D IV with a 24-70 2.8L, and 3 Legged Thing’s “Brian” tripod. This combo I love. The tripods carbon fibre frame is so light and it offsets the weight of the body and lens making it perfect for travel. I used a shutter release cable to minimise camera shake; this makes it much easier to blend in post.Inspiration
Great artists like Stephen Wilkes have inspired me to see photography in a different light. Photography is about capturing moments, and to me this is the most beautiful way of doing it. I love sitting for hours snapping away and watching how the world interacts.Editing
This shot required a lot of work in post. Not so much in colour correction but rather in the selection of events that occurred to make up the puzzle. I use Adobe Lightroom to base edit the photos with respect colour correction. Once I have selected all the individual events that I want to blend, I then import them into photoshop to create the final blend. Selecting which parts of each photo you want to blend is the most time consuming, but in the end it is so rewarding. In my camera bag
I use the Lowepro Pro Tactic 450. Going on a long shoot like this I will have my: Canon 5D Mk.IV with a 24-70 f2.8L Canon 700D with a 10-22mm attached Multiple batteries Spare SD Cards Shutter release cable Tripod L Bracket Shower caps!! They are great to put over your camera when it starts raining. You don’t want to be coming toward the end of the shoot and have to pack up early just because of a light shower. Pop a shower cap over the top of the lens and body and you’re equipment is now safe from the rain. Jumper Snacks! Snacks are very important there is nothing worse than being 3 hours into a shoot and golden hour is absolutely pumping and you start getting hungry... snacks is a must I also bring an iPad with a SD Dongle.. prior to finalising the shot I’ll import a test into Lightroom to see composition a then during the shoot i can mark points of interest on the photo. Sometimes I “panic” throw in the GoPro 6 for a time lapse.Feedback
Two Tips 1) Be patient! This type of photo does take a while to shoot, but the result is incredible. I found that taking an iPad with a movie or a TV show that doesn’t require much attention helps. Usually I’ll have a TV series playing in the background, this helps you take a visual break, especially while you are waiting for the lighting event to start. 2) never stop shooting because the lighting event wasn’t that great, or it looked like the weather was going to set in. I’ve found the moments that I’ve pushed through with have produce the best results.
