Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in a Gariyabandh District of Chhattisgarh state of India.

Time

It was the rainy season bu the day was actually partially clouded and then became sunny after the noon and showered heavily after we left the place. We were fortunate enough to get the shot before the rain in the noon itself. It was captured on 24th of September 2019 during the day time around 12.30-1PM.

Lighting

As it was a bit higher altitude region, there was the uncertainty of weather. First it was all cloudy, and overcast and then it slightly became partially clouded. Due to this, the light fell on the various spots differently and then variation in the intensity of light is what made me go for this angle that clearly depicts the moving clouds along with some empty area from where the light is falling.

Equipment

This was shot on Nikon Z6 with FTZ mount and the Tamron 11-16 mm lens. The focal length I was supposed to keep was 16mm itself to avoid the vignetting. The tripod I used was an aluminium made Kamron tripod that had the capability to fully stretch the legs out and lower down to almost ground level. This is what I took advantage of to make the photo look more gigantic by getting it shot from the lower angle.

Inspiration

There are various Landscape Photographers whom I follow and appreciate and get inspired by their work. One of them is Erwin Buske. So, when I reached here, I realized that this is the moment I've been waiting for. The trees, waterfall and the dramatic light, everything was in perfect mood to be shot.

Editing

Yes, I indeed post processed it. Played with the hue of the greens, turned it to yellow to give a moody autumn look. But I liked the other version of it as well which is actually dark and much more moody tone and contrast and has actual green hue(a picture just after this one in this profile itself). The actual thought behind giving this a yellow touch was to make it feel like a dream as it was a dream to me to capture such a beauty of nature.

In my camera bag

My Nikon Z6, Nikon 50mm 1.8G, Nikkor Z 35mm 1.8S. The 11-16mm was a borrowed lens from a companion.

Feedback

When you travel to such places where its dense jungle and higher altitude area, try to get along with at least two extra persons for your personal safety reasons. Try to cut the weight and avoid unnecessary things, understand the required lenses. Check the weather forecast and carry some plastic or water resistant bag that can help you save your gear in the extreme weather conditions. Be prepared with some safety measures like pepper/bear sprays and safety knife. Always carry a tripod whenever you plan to shoot landscapes. Do some research about the area and its surroundings. Most important, do not litter the place and avoid harming the nature there. Let it be in its natural form.
