This old Spanish fort, erected in the year 1571 at the mouth of the Pasig river as a part of the old walled city of Intramuros in Manila, withstood heavy mortar fire in 1945 from American and Filipino forces during the battle of Manila. It is also the site of a mass grave site for Japanese prisoners of war who were discovered dead inside the prisons of Fort Santiago when the fort was liberated from Imperial Japanese control in that same year.
