The Umibōzu are yokai or spirits of Japanese folklore. They appear on the high seas, during quiet nights and very few people have survived their visit. The water becomes wild and from the dark depths a colossal black figure emerges, with a shaved and rounded head. It is said that the Umibōzu are the souls of people who have no one to look after their graves and therefore seek refuge in the sea. Due to their appearance, they are also linked to drowned monks.
