Location
This photo was taken in the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, in the United Arab Emirates. Our local photography group works with them to try and get photos for their instructional and educational material.Time
We had arrived before sunrise, mainly because we wanted to be amongst the dunes at sunrise, but also on the hopes of catching some rare nocturnal sites. The series of photos this came from was taken just before 7 am.Lighting
I had tried and failed miserably with silhouette photos of giraffes in Africa the previous year so I really wanted these to turn out. No extra light, I tried to balance foreground and background and am pretty happy with most photos on the series.Equipment
This was shot with an older Canon 60D crop sensor camera and a Tamron 150-600mm zoom lens. Hand held too.Inspiration
The Arabian oryx, or the oryx in general really, makes for such a striking silhouette. I failed miserably getting giraffes the year before, so when we saw this herd with the sun coming up behind them, it seemed like I had to take the shot.Editing
I have a preset in Lightroom for all my wildlife photos - sets the whites, blacks and shadows, a little sharpening as well. For this one I pushed the blacks though. In my camera bag
I’m fortunate enough to be able to borrow a second body when I go, so there’s two bodies, my Tamron 150-600, a Canon 10-22, and a Sigma 18-200 as well.Feedback
As an amateur, I’m not sure my words should be heeded as wisely as some of the other contributors on this site, but don’t be afraid to press the shutter button. That’s the beauty of digital - we can make mistakes and not have to pay money to someone to develop them.
