Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my partner's parents back garden. I love working with natural light and open spaces so this was a perfect opportunity to practice.

Time

This image was taken during September's golden hour, which has always been my favourite time to shoot. I tend to keep my shots natural, and the golden sun with an orange glow really does highlight every beautiful aspect of a particular moment.

Lighting

It's all natural, golden hour light.

Equipment

This was shot on Canon 6D MKII and a 24-105mm lens.

Inspiration

I really wanted to take some lovely photos of my sister! Well, it's my partners sister but I've known her since she was 6 years old so I treat her as my own. She was 11 at a time and just started to go through a teenage "appearance" phase and I just wanted to show her how beautiful she really was. I usually tend to incorporate some nature aspects into my portraiture, and this one was no exception.

Editing

I did my usual, turning down the highlights, fixing up the exposure and ever so slightly adjusting the orange, yellow and green hues and luminance.

In my camera bag

I am actually quite a minimalist so I tend to only carry my Canon 6D MK II with the 24-105mm lens, and occasionally also the 85mm.

Feedback

The best piece of advice that I have would be to look past what is in front of you. For this shot, I actually asked my sister to lean on a bush instead of standing in front of it, which definitely added to the depth of the photograph and created some interesting shadows around half of her face.
