The Benedictine Abbey of Tihany was founded by King Andrew I of the Árpád dynasty in 1055. It was built in honour of the Virgin Mary and St. Aignan, and for the salvation of his closer family and the royal dynasty. King Andrew and his son were buried in the crypt of the church.
