This photograph was taken on the floor whilst playing with my friend’s young cat. Keeping her engaged whilst taking the photo was probably my biggest challenge.Time

It was a sunny day and the sun was streaming through the window which produced strong shadows and dark patches or alternatively over exposure. This meant I was constantly having to adjust my camera settings to get the desired exposure.Equipment

I love a challenge and I knew that capturing Ruthie’s personality and playfulness would be just that. However, with the added technical challenge of lighting, continual re-focusing and producing an interesting image how could I resist?Editing
I try to get the photograph right so I don’t have to do much in post-processing so the main thing I did here was to crop to a square to minimise distractions.In my camera bag
My go to lens is my Nikon 24-120mm. It gives me the ability to adapt quickly. I also generally carry a flash as well as a polarising and a neutral density lens to help with whatever lighting challenges I might face. I often find it useful to carry a tripod with me, either my Manfrotto 190go! or my sturdy Joby gorilla pod. Along with my Nikon D750.Feedback
I was once told by a professional photographer that a mistake lots of new photographers make is to take too much kit with them, therefore decide what you want to shoot and stick with the necessary items. Taking all your lenses generally results in indecisiveness, backache and most of your kit not leaving your bag.
