Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at one of my favorite gardens nearby. I go there all the time in the summer!

Time

I usually visit the gardens around mid afternoon some days, so I took this photo just as the light was beginning to reach peak brightness, which I saw as an opportunity to get the best natural look possible.

Lighting

The midday lighting made for the perfect photo. I love the way the sun was positioned above, so I could get an angle without it being too bright, or having too many shadows.

Equipment

For this photo, my uncle so generously loaned me his Canon T3 and starting lens. When I go to the gardens for photos, I always have my gear on hand, however for this photo I sought to get the best focus possible, so I used only my tripod for stability.

Inspiration

This was the first time I had ever sought to take a photo like this. I was drawn to the bright colors of the flower, and I knew immediately I would want to leave with documentation of its beauty. I looked to find the best angle, and I naturally gravitated towards a closeup, where I noted the pollen stems, which would be the focus.

Editing

For my flower photos, I like to keep them looking vibrant and natural, so the adjustments I made were in the category of lighting (exposure) and vibrance, though each adjustment was relatively small.

In my camera bag

Most anywhere I go, I bring my Canon EOS Rebel T7, my trusty companion. On days where I have an idea of what I am looking for, I pack only certain items, however a tentative packing list looks like this- my camera, my tripod, lensball, and a spray bottle of water for droplet effect.

Feedback

If you are looking to take a similar photo, I highly recommend finding a vibrant flower to add color to the photo. I was lucky to have found such a colorful specimen, because the colors formed a sort of ombré as the pink petals descended into yellow. Secondly, I recommend focusing solely on the pollen stems, as opposed to the flower as a whole, to gain the best view of the close detail of the pollen.
