Behind The Lens

Location

Taken at Malibu Beach, it was a long time bucket list place to visit I finally made happen.

Time

Roughly an hour and a half drive from home, my partner and I started out just before sunrise in hopes of being one of the first to arrive and find a parking space as it gets quite crowded, especially on weekends. We managed to get there just as the parking lot opened and cleaning crew were finishing up.

Lighting

Still very early in the morning, I used whatever natural light was available in the overcast skies and it was perfect!

Equipment

This was shot with a Nikon D750 and a Tokina 28-70mm, no flash or tripod.

Inspiration

Looking for new places to shoot maternity sessions, I researched Malibu online well in advance of actually going. The seascape and images I found were breathtaking and I wanted to see and capture them myself. California and the PNW have some of the most amazing and picturesque coastline I've ever seen.

Editing

For this particular shot, some exposure adjustment in LR was about the only thing needed.

In my camera bag

I usually carry my D750, Tokina 28-70mm, Nikkor 35mm, 50mm and 85mm and MagMod gear. I may have my partner bring my D7000, Tokina 100mm macro and tripod, depending on the adventure's location.

Feedback

Plan your shoot, trip and location accordingly and be sure to check the weather. Low tide is preferred for beaches because it allows for greater mobility and access to some amazing tide pools and things you might otherwise miss during high tide.
