Location
This photograph was taken in the city centre of Port Elizabeth, South Africa. I'm a sunrise, sunset, moon, stars, ocean and nature person, so I found a bit of peace in this image being surrounded by grey buildings.Time
It was taken just after sunrise on the 11 August 2019. August is still winter in South Africa, so it was a chilly morning. For some reason we had woken up super early and couldn't get back to sleep. I called a friend that had been going on some photo expeditions with me and within an hour he had it to my house with his camera and we jumped in the car with a flask of coffee and had made it to our first location before sunrise.Lighting
The sunlight was just perfect for this image. With the sun rising behind the subject, it gave a beautiful and natural golden backlight.Equipment
I shot this on my "baby camera". Canon 450D with a 18-55mm lens. No other equipment was used and even though I have graduated to a newer, better spec Canon, I still use my 450D often. It's like my "firstborn"Inspiration
My goal on this particular day was to photograph the sunrise with the buildings of the city in the foreground. As I was walking around, looking for my angle, this caught my eye and the way that the sun was literaly making it sparkle golden. I spent probably an hour photographing it, not because I was looking for the perfect shot, but rather because I just felt at peace examining it from every possibly angle. It was this little bit of beauty surrounded by grey and brick buildings. It was significant to me.Editing
I was extremely fortunate that this shot did not need much post-processing. I only did a slight crop and colour boost just to enhance to golden glow a little. And that is it.In my camera bag
My grab and run equipment is pretty simple. I always have both my Canon EOS R as well as my Canon 450D. I like having both a full frame and a crop sensor handy. The difference in quality between the two is pretty much like night and day, but often there are just images that I prefer to capture on the crop sensor. Currently, for the R I keep the 24-105mm lens in my bag. I find it versatile and a good go to lens. If I'm chasing a sunset or a sunrise, a seascape or some moody clouds, my tripod is an absolute must.Feedback
I believe you need to stay very aware of your surroundings. I had gone out this morning with a completely different vision in mind. If I had focussed purely on the sunrise, I would have missed this shot. When I go shoot, I usually have an idea of what I would like to achieve, however, my eyes are everywhere because you just never know when and where you're going to find a perfect shot. What made this image was the sun acting as the perfect golden backlight, so look at ways to use what is at your disposal.
