Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on a baseball field in Sandpoint, ID.

Time

This was an afternoon game being played just before my favorite time of day for photos. The sun was still pretty bright, but the angle was a good one.

Lighting

The sun was to the west of the field so I placed myself on the 1st base side of the field behind home plate so I wouldn’t have to worry about it being too bright behind the players this time of day.

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon 7D with a Canon 70-200 f4.0 lens. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

My son is the catcher so I try to also make sure I feature the catcher in focus and not always the pitcher. I like the story a shot like this tells.

Editing

I typically add a slight I sharp mask and pop the colors a bit using a saturation and contrast boost.

In my camera bag

I don’t carry a lot of equipment with me. My 70-200 lens and sun shield are usually on my camera then I grab my 50mm in case I want to take any group shots after the game. I also have my monopod and rain bag to put over my camera in case it gets wet. And of course an extra battery!

Feedback

When photographing sports, be aware of where the action is happening and place yourself in a good position. I like to get low by sitting or even laying on the ground. I think it sets my shots apart from others. I am able to get different angles that way.
