An interesting, as well as a gloomy & depressing, place to visit, an earth embankment fortress replete with bunkers, built shortly after the Civil War as one of three forts to defend the mouth of the Columbia River. As I walked through, it was to me yet another reminder of man's constant and necessary preoccupation with defense against aggression of other men and the deployment of precious resources to accomplish warfare against warfare. You'd think that the genius of the highest species which accomplishes great wonders would be able to solve this most important dilemma of all. But we cannot.
