Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken 2 years ago at the Tsuut’ina Nation PowWow located about 34 km outside of Calgary,AB.

Time

This was a 3-day event in July running 26-28. I arrived the Saturday, just before noon. I was very excited to be there. I have always wanted to attend and I finally went.

Lighting

That day was very hot and humid a lil bit. The dance competition was held under their pavilion . I can say natural lighting was limited and only use of the florescent lighting. I didn’t want to use a flash, being this was my first event and I know there were some do’s and don’t’s when attending .

Equipment

I used my Canon 7D Mark II and Canon 7D, switching between the two. Lens used were the Canon 100-400mm on this shot. Again switching to the Canon 70-300mm. I couldn’t really set up with a tripod because of the limited standing areas.

Inspiration

Being from the southern states where there is so much history. My maternal grandmother has native in her and she told me some of her history, but I was to young to really understand and now have forgotten. I’ve lived here twenty plus years in Canada and to be honest, I was afraid because people would say to me, not safe. In 1999, I got to work for a treaty off and I was truly blessed and met some wonderful people while employed there. Years later, I finally said, nothing to it but do it and I did. I watched the dancers both male and female, young and old perform. I always tell myself, when I’m looking through my lens, I see life different. When I saw this dancer, I met his eyes through my lens. The sounds of the drums, his movement brought me into another reality. When he came out, I followed him and asked if I could take his photo and he politely said yes. I thanked him and I was so excited to get his picture, I didn’t get any contact information .

Editing

Being that I am just an amateur photographer, I haven’t really gotten into the more detail editing. I do shoot in Raw/JPEG combinations. I think at that time, I was still learning the Canon 7D Mark II. I had just gotten it for Christmas and by the winters being so cold here, I hadn’t had much time to really process what this camera can do. I usually edit in Photoshop

In my camera bag

I try not to over load my camera bag. On this shoot, I had the two lens mentioned above and my Sigma 18-35. I usually have my mono as well.

Feedback

As an amateur photographer, just go out and shoot and practice. I guess because one of sons were in sports and that is how I started this journey . If you are just starting out, shoot everything, people , animals, landscapes , and objects. If you live near a zoo, the very best to learn about shutter speed, lighting, and aperture .
