Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on a working cattle ranch near Westcliffe, Colorado. I was on a photography workshop that concentrated on Horses and Barns.

Time

It was a frigid November sunrise. Temperature was about 20 degrees so frost was glistening on the grass. The wind was whipping up and causing frozen fingers.

Lighting

This photo was taken during one of the most beautiful sunrises I’ve experienced.

Equipment

This shot was with my Canon EOS Rebel T7i, 24mm 1/125 f-22. RAW. Lens- Canon EF 24-105, f3.5-5.6 IS. Handheld and no flash used.

Inspiration

The sunrise was gorgeous. I could see the sun just peeking above the horizon. I could see an opportunity arising with one of the ranchers on her horse so I positioned myself on my belly and started shooting. This photo was taken at 1/125s -f22 to get the starburst of the sun.

Editing

For post processing I use Lightroom. Minimal post processing was done to this particular photo. I adjusted the lowlights in the foreground and final sharpened.

In my camera bag

I’ve learned to downsize the amount of equipment in my bag due to weight and ease of access. I’ve always used Canon body’s. This was a new lens I got just for this workshop. Canon EF 24-105mm IS. I needed a wide angle to shoot Landscapes but a true Wide angle was too expensive. This lens was more affordable and has proven to be very versatile. I love it.

Feedback

Shooting interesting photos I find are always about the lighting. Early morning and dusk will give you the best outcomes. I will plan ahead and try to visualize what I’m trying to capture. Sometimes you just get lucky. Shoot shoot and shoot some more. I’m rarely without a camera be it my iPhone or my “gorilla” cameras.
