Location
I shot this photograph while walking around Haight Ashbury in San Francisco CA. I was shooting the Height for its street art, but saw these homes that resembled the famous "Painted Ladies" in San Francisco, and knew I had to take a shot! I shot 4 different angles, and settles with this one.Time
This shot was taken the end of July in 2009 at 5:30 p.m. in the afternoon.Lighting
I was lucky! I had the sun at the three o'clock position at 5:30 p.m. and it was directly behind me, making the shadows less dense then if I had shot earlier in the day. Also lucky in that it is San Francisco, and at that time, all the haze had burned off, and the sky was beautiful with wispy clouds!Equipment
I hand held my Canon Rebel Xsi (this was my very first digital camera) with an 18-55 mm kit lens, and shot at 50 mm focal length at 200 ISO f/5.6 1/1000 - manual. I played with the kit lens a lot, and discovered quite by accident that f/5.6 on my canon Xsi is the sweet spot - after figuring that out, it really was playing with my shutter speed to get the colors well lit and saturated - I did custom white balance off of a white wall of a grocery store to the right of the corner where I shot the homes.Inspiration
I first saw the color, and then I saw the repetition, and then it was just finding the angle. Not sure I did the best job, I probably should have re-framed more then I did - I look at this now, and wow I can think of a few more angles!Editing
Yes, this was all done in Aperture (well before I could afford and learn PhotoShop). I pushed clarity, and opened the shadows just a bit. If I were going to process this image today, I may use Lightroom and PhotoShop, maybe take out the telephone lines! But then again, ..... its part of the city.In my camera bag
Now a days I have a Canon 5D Mark III, with a sturdy manfrotto tripod, a nifty 50mm, 17-40mm L series, 24-105 mm IS L (also my favorite lens), 70-200 mm L series, with ND filters, 430 ex and 580 ex speed lights, and a 5 in 1 reflector. I also keep a Canon T3i in my bag, I love the crop with my 70-200 mm!Feedback
Seriously listen to your brain! I know that must sound weird, but have you ever caught your self staring at something and you don't immediately know why? I'm fairly certain your brain sees something interesting, you just need to find it and shoot it! Sometimes it becomes obvious, other times its just about composing and recomposing before you see "the shot". Don't worry about gear, just learn the camera you have, and try and take advantage of everything it can do, learn limits and ways of breaking the limits if you can.
