We were on the 2nd night of a 3 day kayak campout, and I set up my tripod to capture the extraordinary night sky that our mortal eye does not see. Starting about an hour and a half after sunset, as the lingering glow of the ambient sunset glow on the horizon on the left shows, I began shooting a succession of 203 shots, of 25 seconds each, for about 2 hours. The light glow on the right is the eastern horizons’ light-pollution from Tahoma, Tahoe City, and Truckee, near Lake Tahoe, California. The small bright pin-points of light in the shoreline center along the far side of the lake, is a campsite of campfires and tents. Our kayaks are quietly parked on the beach, on the right. Night photography has long been a favorite. I love the fascinating colors, textures, and shapes that are revealed under limited lighting conditions. Star trails (and the Milky Way) are some of the most gorgeous subjects. They produce some uniquely fascinating patterns, and can give a landscape a truly abstract, almost surreal edge.
