I was in the Sahara during ramadan. It was hot and many if not all muslims were fasting. It was not often you would see camel caravans led by adult men. Seeing young boys leading the caravans was not unusual. The children did not have to fast which made it easier for them to go into the desert in the sweltering heat because they could drink water.
