This photo was taken at my studio in Tijuana, MX. Julio usually likes to hangout at my desk while I editTime
It was around 11pm on a winter time. It was already dark, I light up the desk lights from my studio, this is where Julio decided to get close to them and there I saw it. It was the perfect moment to make some portraits of himLighting
Because it was alreaday dark, my only source of light was the desk lamp. A very calm and warm light. I could set up a whole studio lighting because Julio wouldn't wait for me. So I just got him close to the main light source and played with a claroscuro feelingEquipment
This session happened because I was testing a gift from a friend. A pentax 55mm 1.8 lens. A very oldschool but really fantastic lens. I got an adaptor to mount it on the Canon 6D No tripod or flash where used. My only source of light was the desk lamp, I did have to do some tricks to make Julio get close to the lightInspiration
Since the mid of the day I got this lens as a gift. I have always loved to use mechanical lenses on digital cameras. For me is a slow down on to taking fewer and more conscious shots. Julio is the very first cat in my life, he got to our house and just stepped in. We adopted him and from them, he has taught me so much. (I was an only dog person before he arrived) As he is always in the studio, sleeping, or just sitting in my desk, it was the perfect moment to capture some of his personality, this is also how I started to learn photography. Through animal portraiture. After a while I started portraying friends and so onEditing
2019 was the year where I transitioned from Lightroom to Capture One This shot I edited on Capture One 12, first of all with basic tools such as exposure, temperture, highlights. And then my favorite part, playing with the 3 way color balance tool to get the color correction I was looking for. There is also a tool to emulate film grain, I added some Tabular Grain as a final touch. In my camera bag
I usually carry a 55mm lens, a 115mm lens (both Pentax mechanical lenses) and a tamron 10-24mm just in case I need a wider lens. I am looking forward to add the bag a zoom lens, for occasions where I can't be changing lensesFeedback
Don't be afraid to take a chance and experiment with what you have. There is no camera or lens that will make a better photo. Only inspiration and willingness to try it will do it. This photo I took as a test, and it turned out to be one of my favorite shots of 2019. When you are starting out, it can be scary, but don't be afraid. Potrait your friends, family your petfriends. Knowing best our roots will always make us grow
