Location
This photo was taken at the Isle of Pine, an island in the Pacific Ocean, in the archipelago of New Caledonia, an overseas collectivity of France.Time
This was taken around 8:15 in the morning. We just got off our boat and the locals were waiting for us garbed in their traditional outfit. Women have flowers and palm leaves ready to hand to us. Children were all excited milling around us as we hopped on the land. I love that the children were not jaded and they were curious to see us as well.Lighting
I think it was a good time to take this photo as it was just an hour or so after sunrise. Within that time, it was perfect to shoot after the morning golden hour. It gave me a fantastic mood to this photo.Equipment
I used Nikon D5100. I didn't have to use flash as it wasn't a backlit subject.Inspiration
I am very fond of taking portraits especially of local people that I meet when I am travelling around the world. I love to showcase the expression on their eyes. If I can get a nice picture with a perfect "look" then I get home very satisfied. They say, the eyes are the windows to the soul, and I believe that as evidenced by some of my portraits of different people from around the world including this girl from Kuto! She is a bit shy but deep inside I can read from her eyes that she has a strong curiosity to get to know me and interact in a friendly manner.Editing
I didn't do any post-processing as a I rarely do.In my camera bag
I have three Nikon camera all the time in my travelling camera bag, a Nikon D5100, a Nikon underwater camera, a Nikon D40X. I also have a Nikon lens 18-300 mm so i don't need to change lens when I have very limited time on certain places. I also have a few filters handy.Feedback
Learn a few of the local language especially greetings and saying thank you. It will surely endear you to the locals no matter even if your pronunciation is not correct. Don't be shy even if you make a mistake, sometimes, it is a start of a good pictorial when they laugh at you because of your accent or pronunciation. Ask first before you shoot. In some countries, they are very willing to pose for photographs but it is polite to always ask.
