Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my home studio in June 22, 2019. I am in my last semester of getting my BFA in Photography and as such I took every chance I get to take images of different people who come and visit, and try new things with them.

Time

This was taken on June 22, 2019 around 3:30pm after we had late lunch. It was a spontaneous idea to use my sisters friend as a model, because it was so funny to see how he can eat anything without any teeth, and there the thought was born to shoot him as the retired Popey.

Lighting

I wanted to create a bit of a dramatic lighting but really didn't had any idea how to bring out that kind of style I was looking for. I started out with two lights where I used one of each side and just moved it around until I felt it was lighting his face just the right way. I guess I never really have a fix idea but start with one light and add some more if I feel it needs it or use fill light. I am more of a trial and error kind of photograph, where I start out with once thing and keep changing until it works for me.

Equipment

I used my Canon 5D Mark iii and my Canon 70-200 F/2.8 lens. This image was shot with an ISO of 320, F/5.0, 1/60 sec and 145mm with the camera on a tripod. I used a Hensel Porty Premium Plus 1200 Watt/Second lighting system.

Inspiration

My inspiration was the person itself, he is such a funny person and since he has not a single tooth in his mouth he can do all this funny facial grimaces, which was just a must to take different pictures of him. My first thought was Popay after he switched the can of spinach into a can of beer and after that everything just started to come together.

Editing

Yes I always do post processing, check the highlight clippings, and do my basic corrections in lightroom and then took it into photoshop. In photoshop I cleaned up his face, and shirt and added smoke to the cigarette. For to add that smoke I used a second shot of a burning cigarette and used some smoke presets I had to make it even more visible. I also added some texture and HDR toning to make the face a bit more dramatic. I alway work on the eyes to bring out the iris and eye white.

In my camera bag

I always have my Canon 5D Mark iii as well as my Canon 70 - 200 lens as well as my Sigma 35mm and my Tamron 24-70mm. My two Yongnuo speedlite as well as my Profoto A1 always needs to be with me as I never know when I need it together with a 20 AAA batteries. I also have always 6 extra Canon batteries and a view extra SD-cards. My business cards and a note book as well as pen and glasses with some cleaning cloth for the lenses and the reading glasses. Sometimes I take with me the bag with my extra ND filters and UV filters.

Feedback

My only advise it keep shooting and try something new, either it works or it doesn't but as more as you try out new things as better you will know what works and what doesn't and you will get better every time.
