This is Sophia, one of the residents at Black Goat Farm Sanctuary. She was a battery hen - bred and raised to lay eggs, over and over again, at a much higher rate than what’s natural. Due to decades of genetic manipulation and selective breeding, they produce 250 to 300 eggs per year whereas in nature, wild hens would lay only 10 to 15 eggs annually. You can see that Sophia had lost most of her feathers by the time she was rescued, and she was quite timid when she was first brought to the sanctuary. The day I took these pictures, she was out with all of the other chickens relaxing in the sun. A lot of people can acknowledge the horrors of the meat industry but turn a blind eye to the dairy industry. They go hand in hand and one is not “less cruel” than the other. This is where your eggs come from.
