This photo was taken in my living room at home - not a home studio! I'm an enthusiastic amateur and so a lot of my portraits are taken at my home (or anywhere else I can find that's free and available).Time
Despite being taken indoors, this is actually one of my favourite ever 'golden hour' photographs! The light was coming in perfectly though the window and so I couldn't resist an impromptu photoshoot with my partner.Lighting
It was the golden light coming through the window that inspired me to do the shoot. It was coming through onto the floor, and so that's where I got my partner to lay down as though bathed in the light. To make sure as much natural light as possible was on him, I took down the curtains and brought down a large mirror from the bathroom to reflect the light back down onto him from the little that was on the wall behind too.Equipment
For this shoot I used my camera (PENTAX K-5 II) and the standard 18-55 lens that was on it at the time.Inspiration
Viewbug regularly has boudoir and sensuality portrait competitions and challenges and while there are some tremendous entries and winners, you rarely see male photos entered. This was a driving force behind me wanting to do this photoshoot! I wanted to try and bring the same sense of mood and stylings to a male model.Editing
It was the natural golden light in the moment that made me take this photo, and so with the post-processing I wanted to really enhance the deep richness of this light by enhancing the saturation and depth of tone in the model's skin. I then softened the texture of the skin while retaining the detail around the mouth and beard, and made sure there was a nice brightness in the eyes.In my camera bag
I usually travel very lightly when I'm going on a photography trip. This is because when I used to take multiple lenses and other pieces of equipment with me, I spent half my time changing the lenses and settings. Instead, I now focus on the compositions and subject matter that match the lens I bring with me. This way I find I take a higher quality of photo as I have more time to perfect the particular photos as opposed to playing with settings and attatchments.Feedback
It is important to try and make a connection between the model and the viewer. This is why there is very strong eye contact and a close crop into the face.
