This image was taken at the kelentengjindeyuan budhist temple in the chinatown district of northjakarta dating from 1650. The history of chinese ethnic groups in Jakarta is turbulent and the history of this temple is no different! The initial complex of Vihara Dharma Bhakti erected in 1650, but burned down during the 1740 massacre of Chinese Ethic Groups. The temple was rebuilt in 1755. In 2015 the temple was once again destroyed but this time by accident. The temple is at the centre of Chinese Related festivities in Jakarta and currently undergoing renovation
The temple also known as kimtekIe and viharadharmabhakti is a series of buildings and open spaces were people come to worship. It is also a gathering place for beggars, especially young children and mothers with children, due to its popularity with tourist. The young mother was one of several begging when I visited. Unlike the rest of asia however, requests are typically less pushy and at the temple begging is restricted to the main square outside
