Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken out on Buffalo Pound Lake at our home by Moose Jaw in Saskatchewan, Canada.

Time

We enjoy taking a walk on the frozen lake in the winter. Our retriever, Soelle, absolutely loves the freedom she has on the lake when she comes with us, and for her it's high speed the whole time! This morning, at about 10:00 am, Soelle was a bit of a distance off when we called her to return to us. This image captured her total glee as she came racing back in overdrive!

Lighting

This was the perfect day for taking this shot. Even though morning, the lighting was diffused with a complete cloud cover. It was perfect for capturing the dog, eliminating all shadows for a neat capture. Other photographers have asked how I was able to do this in the studio, lol!

Equipment

This shot was taken by a Canon EOS Kiss X3, Canon 100-400 lens, shot at f5.6, 1/2000, ISO 200 at 320mm. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

Our dog's infectious enthusiasm was all I needed to turn my lens on her. When I did, I loved the way the red colour of her coat stood out so well against the white snow cover of the lake. When I was standing up and shooting slightly downward, I realized I could shoot without capturing the opposite lake shore and therefore isolate the dog entirely for this neat perspective.

Editing

My post-processing was minimal and basic. I did some work with the shadows on her face and also with the highlights, to make the snow around her feet pop for a better visual. I am one of those photographers who always does a slight sharpening and perhaps some contrast and vibrancy control on most of my images, and I did with this one, too.

In my camera bag

I have 2 bags - one I carry around like an extra purse, and a second one for more serious photography trips that carries all my equipment. The small bag simply has my EOS R6 Canon camera with its RF 24-105 lens, extra cards, spare battery, lens cleaning cloth, remote trigger. The second bag carries my Canon EF 100-400 lens, Canon EFS 55-250 and a Tokina SD 11-16, with a converter. It also carries my Canon Speedlite 430EXII with a diffuser, lens hoods, light meter, extra batteries, gorilla pod and monopod and anything else I might need for the day! I carry my full size tripod if needed.

Feedback

I found when trying to capture my dog running toward me, using a long lens is great for depth of field and lighting; it's important to shoot with a high shutter speed and shoot a number of fps while she is running toward me - bound to get one good image if I do that! Just shoot and shoot often!! :)
