This here dog’s the third to bear the name Duchess. After each was gone, I thought I could live alone for awhile. But the feeling never took hold. Now, this one might just outlive me. Especially if I don’t heed her warnings. Like when she curled her lip and gave that throaty growl. We were out exploring and she wouldn’t move past the doorway, so I went in alone. Just over the threshold was a rattler, coiled up, ready to strike. Man, I didn’t need no second invitation.

Duchess finally caught up with me down by the dry creek bed.
