I took this photo at the Grand Canyon back in 2011. I was at my first job that didn't require me to work between Christmas and New Year's. In fact, it was the first time in my working career that I had that whole week off. I didn't know what to do. So, since Christmas was on Sunday, I woke up very early on Monday morning and began my two day trek from Georgia to Arizona to spend three days with a friend who was living and working at the Grand Canyon.Time
This photo was taken about 1-2 in the afternoon. I had spent most of the morning hiking along the South Rim with my friend when we came upon a mule deer grazing. Then I noticed a group of trees. This isn't the only tree I took a picture of that day - but, it is my favorite.Lighting
All natural lighting of the day. A Beautiful, blue sky day. Outside of an occasional crop or changing a color photo to monochrome - I haven't really done any photo editing.Equipment
Canon XSi body. My favorite everyday lens is my Sigma 18-200mm lens.Inspiration
I have kind of always looked at the world as if framing for a photo ever since my dad first put a camera in my hands when I was 8. If I travel across country (other than by myself) he tends to want to do the driving so I can take pictures. I have taken many, many picture from a moving car, but if I should ask it, he is quick to hit the breaks and stop. Out of all of our trips I have only one regret - we were travelling along I-80 headed west when I saw this huge, golden wheat field with a sole, blue tractor sitting in the middle of it. It would have made for a great photo, but I quickly took stock of the traffic (ie: multiple big rigs behind us) and made the decision to keep quiet. Dad says he would have gladly stopped. I know he would have, but I didn't think it would be the safe move given all the traffic at the time.Editing
No.In my camera bag
Then: Canon XSi or Canon XT bodies. My favorite Sigma 18-200mm lens. Now: Canon 80D body. Still my favorite Sigma 18-200mm lens and have added a Canon 100-400mm lens with it's companion 2x Extender.Feedback
The only advice I can give is to pay attention to the world around you. Every once in a while a friend and I will do these challenges: We choose an item from our lives (one year I carried a key-chain of Link from "The Legend of Zelda" in my pocket) and we would take photos with that item of things that were around us in our everyday lives. I took a picture of Link with things like: An empty pay phone booth at a rest stop, meeting Abraham Lincoln's statue at "The Battle of Gettysburg" or meeting my "Gentle Giant" the man who was my bale mate at my first major Archery Tournament. It was an exercise in seeing the everyday and not just letting it pass us by.
