Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in the interior forests of the Western Ghats, a continuous evergreen forest range that runs along the west coast of India.

Time

This was taken right at midday, just as we were going to have lunch

Lighting

Since it was taken at midday, one would expect harsh lighting but with enough cloud cover, the light was just right.

Equipment

I used an Olympus OMD EM1 with an 18-40mm f2.8 PRO lens.

Inspiration

We were part of a research team following a King Cobra which had just settled down in a burrow. Once we realized that he was going to stay in for a while, we were about to break for lunch when I saw a flash of red down in a ravine. It was a Calotes rouxii, a male in its bright red plumage that was trying to entice a dull female that was nearby. It was quite a descent to reach the animal but since it was trying to woo the female, it allowed me to approach really close and snap this shot.

Editing

I just reduce the exposure slightly and cropped this image.

In my camera bag

I try to be a minimalist photographer so I just carry my Olympus OMD EM1 with 2 lenses; a 18-40mm f2.8 pro lens and a 14mm prime.

Feedback

Photographs are all around us. Just be vigilant and look around; you would be surprised by all the possibilities.
